"There is no reason for people to trespass on private lands to access the Chitina fisheries; therefore, we do not need to pay these corporations a trespassing fee..."
- Rep. Coghill
(JUNEAU)- The Alaska Outdoor Council has named Representative John Coghill (R-North Pole) their legislator of the year for 2004. The AOC is recognizing Representative Coghill for his steadfast support of States' Rights and the Second Amendment.
During his career, Representative Coghill has been the sponsor of numerous pieces of legislation and resolutions that the AOC believes make him a worthy recipient of this annual honor. His stance on gun rights and fish and game issues, in particular his efforts to repeal the Chitna Dipnetting fee. And his setting aside partisan politics to join forces with Representative Eric Croft (D-Anchorage) to pass legislation allowing law-abiding citizens to conceal carry a firearm, has set him apart from other legislators in his commitment to the issues that matter to the AOC.
"It is truly an honor to receive this award. The Second Amendment and our right to hunt and fish in Alaska are fundamental to our way of life. I have always tried to defend and protect those rights and it means a great deal to me to be partners with the AOC," said Representative Coghill. He went on to say, "Future generations will reap the benefits of the hard work we do today and the AOC is important part of that work."
Representative Coghill will be presented the award tomorrow during the AOC Banquet at Pikes Waterfront Lodge in Fairbanks.
