"There is statistical evidence that shows the increased number of DWI accidents can be directly related to extended bar hours."
- Rep. Dahlstrom
"An Act relating to the hours during which sale of alcohol and entry on licensed premises is allowed; and providing for an effective date."
HB 274 will put into place a uniform state law regarding bar closures and by doing so help to reduce the number of vehicular incidents on Alaska's roads.
The high costs of problem drinking are everywhere and many want the legislature to attempt to find ways of mitigating these costs. As that number of inebriates climbs, the level of problems associated with drinking also escalates. Additionally, law enforcement officials arrest a higher percentage of intoxicated drivers in the late night, early morning hours.
House Bill 274 is designed to reduce the number of problem drinkers and is based on existing measures both in-state and nationally. There is statistical evidence that shows the increase number of DWI accidents can be directly related to extended bar hours.
