"The bill was moving forward in the Alaska Legislature at the same time the federal legislation was moving in Congress. Once the National No-Call List bill passed, we wanted to see what the federal law and regulations would accomplish, and then mold the state legislation to fit any loopholes and to meet the specific needs of Alaskans."
- Rep. Fate
(FAIRBANKS) - Representative Hugh Fate (R), District 7, sponsor of Alaska's No-Call List Bill, today reemphasized the importance of continuing the Alaska No-Call list legislation. "In light of the U.S. District Court ruling in Oklahoma City which, at least temporarily blocked the national list, it is critical that House Bill 15 be passed into law to protect Alaskans," Fate said.
House Bill 15 is currently in the House Finance Committee. It was held there during the first session by mutual agreement between Representative Fate and Finance Co-Chair Representative Bill Williams. According to Fate, "The bill was moving forward in the Alaska Legislature at the same time the federal legislation was moving in Congress. Once the National No-Call List bill passed, we wanted to see what the federal law and regulations would accomplish, and then mold the state legislation to fit any loopholes and to meet the specific needs of Alaskans."
Fate Added, " I am confident that today's court ruling will be overturned, however exactly when, is anyone's guess. This is not the only federal suit pending and it could take years for the suits to make their way through the Federal Court system. My concern is Alaskans, who deserve to be protected from annoying telemarketing calls."
HB 15 was in the process of being re-drafted to fill in the gaps left by the federal legislation. The current version of the bill may continue to be considered based on what happens in the coming months with the Federal law.
