"This is important legislation for a lot of people. Alaskans want to own a piece of their state, especially in the more remote areas."
- Rep. Fate
(Juneau) - The House Finance Committee approved House Bill 319, sponsored by Representative Hugh Fate (R-Fairbanks), during it's afternoon meeting today. The Committee was the final stop before the bill is heard on the House Floor. Several changes were made to the latest version, most importantly allowing a person to nominate a site and then apply for a lease rather than asking for a first right of refusal.
Also changed is the maximum amount of land that will be available. Up to 10 acres could be selected, especially important in boroughs with specific platting requirements. Because of the potential increase in acreage, the amount of waterfront footage has also been expanded.
The new language is incorporated into the Committee Substitute for HB 319 (FIN) and is now headed to the House Rules Committee for calendaring. Representative Fate said, "This is important legislation for a lot of people. Alaskans want to own a piece of their state, especially in the more remote areas. It's a place to get away for a weekend retreat or to hunt and fish. I look forward to moving this bill onto the House floor."
