"... a person will be able to select a piece of land he or she is familiar with and nominate it rather than have the state tell them where they can look"
- Rep. Fate
(Juneau) - Representative Hugh Fate's (R-Fairbanks) most important piece of Legislation has moved to it's final committee in the Legislature. The Senate Resources Committee passed out House Bill 319, which will allow Alaskans to nominate a remote parcel of land to build a cabin.
"The one thing I have heard from my friends and neighbors has always been, 'How can I get some remote land in Alaska?' The lottery system just doesn't work because it is not based on residency or any kind of system that is fair. A lot of the land offered is not useable. HB 319 changes that because a person will be able to select a piece of land he or she is familiar with and nominate it rather than have the state tell them where they can look," Fate said.
Following the passage out of committee Friday, the bill moves to the Senate Finance Committee and then on to the Senate floor. It will have to return to the House for concurrence, as there were some technical changes made in the bill. Those allow the Commissioner some flexibility to extend a deadline and allow for a parcel to exceed the 10-acre limit should the survey come in slightly higher.
