(Anchorage) - The House Special Committee on Economic Development: International Trade and Tourism is sponsoring an Economic Summit on Tuesday October 21st at the Bill Sheffield Railroad Depot at the Airport.
The goal of the summit is: To formulate and present to the Alaska State Legislature tangible proposals for real economic development.
At the summit, members of the private sector, Legislators, and concerned citizens will come together in work groups to discuss obstacles and opportunities for economic development in Alaska.
Dr. Vernon Smith, PH.D (Nobel Laureate 2002 Economics) will assist the work groups and provide the closing remarks.
Objective: Host and conduct an economic development summit to clarify the economic situation in the state and identify several courses of action for the legislature in the 2004 session. Host: House Special Committee on Economic Development: International Trade and Tourism. Date: October 21st Location: Bill Sheffield Railroad Depot at the Airport Cost: $35.00 (Morning refreshments and lunch provided by ORSO) Structure: Moderated working groups composed of industry/sector participants will deliberate on three questions:
What is the state of affairs in your sector of the Alaskan Economy?
What are the greatest challenges facing your sector?
What are the greatest opportunities in your sector?
Deliberations will be conducted with the intent of providing the answer to the summit's objective:
What recommendations do you have that would help maximize opportunities and solve challenges?

Structure: Dr. Vernon Smith (2002 Nobel Laureate: Economics) will circulate through ten working groups (15members each), which in concurrent sessions will deliberate throughout the morning. Breakout session will be held after lunch to present the recommendations determined by the working groups. Plenary session moderated by the EDT committee to discuss the overall picture provided in the breakout sessions. Closing remarks and commentary by Dr. Vernon Smith.
