Mike retired in 2000 from Golden Valley Electric Association where he served Interior Alaskans for 33 years, 17 as President/CEO. He served as chair of the statewide Electric Utility Managers' Assoc. and as a member of the national electric cooperatives' Power and Generation Committee. After retirement from Golden Valley, Mike worked two years for the utility as management consultant for special projects.
Mike grew up in Fairbanks and graduated from Monroe High and the University of Alaska, where he majored in Business Management. His wife of 39 years, Cherie, is also alum of both schools. He is past recipient of the Business Leader of the Year Award from the UAF Associated Students of Business and was recognized as Distinguished Alum by the Alumni Association.
Mike serves on the Boards of Denali State Bank, the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Committee on Governance of the American Hospital Assoc., the University of Alaska Foundation, and AlasConnect, Inc. He is a member of Fairbanks Rotary, a past board member of the Fairbanks Industrial Development Corporation and a Past Chair of the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce. He served eight years on the University Of Alaska Board Of Regents, two as President. Mike and Cherie served as Co-chairs of the Annual Hipow Auction which raises over $500 thousand annually to help fund Fairbanks Catholic Schools and Mike is a past Chair of the Monroe/ICS school Board.
In free moments Mike and Cherie enjoy playing outdoors with their large extended family. He is an avid outdoorsman and pilots the family Skywagon on wheels, floats and skis. Mike recently completed a life-long ambition. He re-entered aviation training, earned his multi-engine and Airline Transport Pilot ratings and, before deciding to run for State House, piloted passengers, mail and freight to the Alaskan Bush for Tanana Air Service.
