"Let's not pander to those demanding more taxes, simply because a vocal minority supposedly wants them."
- Rep. Kohring
It's definitely time to restructure Alaska's tax system. But unlike those who continually attempt to tax us into prosperity, we should lessen the tax burden not only on the oil and gas industry, but with all business and productive individuals.
For a vigorous economy, good-paying jobs and a prosperous society, we must make government an institution that protects rights and promotes free enterprise. Private business should make and move the economy. For too long we have intermingled the two, because of the successful efforts of oil producers. Ironically Big Oil pays for the very intrusions and controls government imposes.
Currently, there is a steady supply of oil in the world. But demand is beginning to out pace supply available for manufacturing products from gasoline to jet fuel to plastics. China is rapidly expanding its economy, creating a glutinous demand for oil. As a result, the oil industry, which has given Alaska its bounty, is seeing temporary large profits. It's basic economics.
Any changes to the amount or method of taxing this goose with the golden eggs, unless it's to limit taxes, will hurt all Alaskans in the long run. If the Legislature commands more from oil companies, the ultimate loser will be the consumer who will experience higher prices at the pump due to decreased production.
It's time we take a realistic look at taxing private business. Increases are the wrong approach. If government insists on more money, let it reduce taxes on all business and make market entry and participation easier. We will see greater production in the oil and gas industry, a proliferation of small business growth, and more money in state coffers for roads and schools. Let's not pander to those demanding more taxes, simply because a vocal minority supposedly wants them.
