"Egregious offenders have learned how to work the system by making a single, timely payment, knowing this starts their review process over again. This bill prevents those who are habitually delinquent from abusing a loophole."
- Speaker Kott
(Juneau) - HB 513, sponsored by Representative Pete Kott (R- Eagle River), passed out of the Judiciary Committee today. HB 513 would change the name of the agency responsible for child support collection, and close a loophole in the licensing revocation program run by the Child Support Enforcement Division.
First, the bill seeks to change the name of the agency from Child Support Enforcement Division to Child Support Services Division. Representative Kott hopes that this will mirror the positive attitude toward the division and those who work to ensure that parents pay child support.
"This name change more closely reflects the mission of the agency. It is important that we stand by and help Alaska's young people who deserve the support of both their parents, and this agency is responsible for that duty. They truly serve an important role," he said.
The second aspect of the bill would close a loophole in licensing revocation. This stops the out-of- compliant, non-custodial parent from using the driver's license revocation process in a manner contrary to its intended purpose.
"Egregious offenders have learned how to work the system by making a single, timely payment, knowing this starts their review process over again. This bill prevents those who are habitually delinquent from abusing a loophole."
HB 513 now moves to the House Rules Committee for consideration.
