"This bill closes a loophole in the law that has been abused for years. Now those who are deliberately avoiding child support payments will not be able to exploit the law and avoid their parental responsibility without a cost to themselves."
- Speaker Kott
(Juneau) - A bill, sponsored by Representative Pete Kott (R-Eagle River), changing the name of the Child Support Enforcement Division and closing a loophole in CSED's license suspension process, passed the Alaska House of Representatives today by a unanimous vote.
HB 513 changes the name from Child Support Enforcement Division to Child Support Services Division. The second provision of the bill will keep the clock running for the time an individual has to become current on back child support payments before drivers license revocation occurs.
Representative Kott said of HB 513's passage, "The House agrees with me in putting forth this legislation. It is important that the name of the agency responsible for child support reflect its mission." He went on to say, "This bill closes a loophole in the law that has been abused for years. Now those who are deliberately avoiding child support payments will not be able to exploit the law and avoid their parental responsibility without a cost to themselves. Most importantly, it will help get the money to the families who are entitled to it. Kids deserve to be supported by both parents."
