Over the past decade the NWT has suffered a net migration loss exceeding 2,300 residents. While migration during most of the decade has been negative, there was a significant net benefit from migration in 1999. The latter was associated with the development of BHP and Diavik diamond mines.
Most people leaving the NWT are going to Alberta or British Columbia. As economic conditions improve in these and other southern provinces, the NWT may have difficulty retaining or attracting professionals and technical people.
