Like the NWT, Alaska has been losing people through migration. The largest “out-flux” happened in 1995 when just over 7,000 people left the state. Part of the reason for this “out migration” may be vastly improved economic conditions in the southern states, rather than any reflection of the Alaskan economy.
Second, while these movements of people are greater than in the NWT, their relative impact is smaller. Population movements in the NWT can account for 2~3% of the population, while in Alaska they seldom exceed 1%.
