Hay River is one of the largest inland ports in Canada. Over the past decade it has significantly developed its role as re-supply point for Mackenzie Valley, Beaufort, Arctic Island and Alaska communities. As shown on the map, the marine re-supply system is closely linked with the rail system to Hay River, which is tied into North American and world markets. With the sale of the line to “Rail America”, traffic is expected to increase since CN never really marketed the service.
