Notes:
There are a large number of trade and development considerations between Alaska and the NWT. Past surveys have indicated a high interest by state residents in visiting the NWT – I am sure the same can be said of our residents. At the same time, we can cooperate more in the marketing of tourism to other parts of the world. The NWT is tied to the Alaska Highway through the Dempster and Liard highways.
We have great connections with rail, road and marine links to the North Slope. Hay River could play a far greater role in Alaska re-supply. At the same time, development of our industry and communities needs investment and expertise, and aggregate in the Inuvik region.
We share similar oil and gas deposits – and we can certainly learn from your developments. Alaska offers excellent education programs, geared towards an arctic environment and economy. More of our students could take advantage of these opportunities.
We could also work closer on wildlife and cultural issues.
Development of new polar air routes may offer additional opportunities for development. This is an area we need to further explore. In terms of future development, we also share an interest in the development of Northern Russia.
