Fixing Problems for the Public
So, the Legislature passed a bill that you think will make life better for everyone. But when the law is applied it just doesn't seem like the same bill. What Happened? Sometimes the state departments don't always read the bill the same way and they write regulations based on their interpretation. But what can I do? Scroll down to find out how.
Oversight Responsibilities
We are, by design that step in the process when it seems all else has failed. The Administrative Regulation Review Committee is a year round panel made up of three Senators and three Representatives. We are responsible for oversight:
-
ensure that regulations meet the intent of passed legislation.
-
ensure the public's needs are being met before regulations take effect.
This Committee currently only has oversight functions. However, we are able to make recommendations and/or introduce legislation if necessary. And we are open to any suggestions you may have. We look forward to hearing about your ideas.
The Committee meets regularly throughout the year and you are always invited to let us know when something is wrong. You will find e-mail addresses, mailing addresses and phone numbers for every member of the Committee in these web pages.
Public Comment
This is the best time for all of us to get involved. Whenever a department is considering regulations they notify the public on what they are planning to do. To voice your comments is easy as writing a letter. You can get a copy of the regulations by going to each Department's web page or checking the On-Line Regulation Notice Page.
Get your friends involved
Just like the legislature, state departments pay attention to numbers. When a lot of people testify or write in about a regulation the regulation authors do pay attention. In some cases they will start all over to meet the requests of the public. You do have a voice as long as you make it heard.
