Senate Passes Fast-Track Supplemental Budget
(JUNEAU) - Within hours of moving out of the Senate Finance Committee, the "fast-track" supplemental budget passed out of the Senate with almost unanimous support. House Bill 117 funds immediate needs in the Fiscal Year 2001 budget. Appropriations in the bill include funding for suicide prevention efforts, education and advocacy activities for oil development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and state preparations to bring Alaska's natural gas resources to market. "This fast track budget is indicative of the higher level of cooperation between our congressional delegation and the Legislature," said Sen. Dave Donley (R-Anchorage), co-chair of the Senate Finance Committee. "The appropriations we made will give our congressional delegation the tools they need to fight for our state's interest in opening ANWR." The Senate passed the bill with a vote of 18 to 1, and returned it to the House for consideration of amendments made by the Senate. The Senate Finance Committee has already started public hearings on the regular supplemental budget legislation which will deal with other fiscal adjustments that need to be made before the end of this fiscal year. # # # Attachments:
