Dyson Measure Honors African Americans
Senate Passes Resolution Recognizing Contributions to Alaska

(JUNEAU) - The Senate today unanimously passed a resolution sponsored by Rep. Fred Dyson (R-Eagle River) calling on Alaskans to honor the contributions of African-American citizens by celebrating February 2002 as "African-American Citizen Recognition Month."

House Concurrent Resolution 4 is an effort to make a symbolic, but important acknowledgement of a group of Alaskans who have made, and continue to make, important contributions to the state, said Dyson. The measure received unanimous support in the Senate, as it did when it passed the House in the first legislative session.

"By setting aside this month for Alaskans to think about their friends, neighbors, co-workers and fellow citizens of African descent, I think we can help build understanding and appreciation of the different threads that make up the human tapestry of Alaska," Dyson said. "Like the rest of the country, Alaska has grown and prospered through the contributions of a very diverse group of people. This is one way we can recognize an important minority group, and help encourage unity among Alaskans of all races."

Alaska is home to nearly 28,000 citizens of African-American descent, involved in every aspect of state life, including government, academics, public service, military service and private industry, and "African-American Citizen Recognition Month" will be an opportunity to build public awareness of that fact, Dyson said.
