Rep. Andrew Halcro Will Not Seek Re-Election
Family Business Needs Prompt Two Term Republican’s Decision Says Republican

(JUNEAU) - Rep. Andrew Halcro (R-Anchorage) today announced that he would not seek a third term in the Alaska House of Representatives, saying he needs to focus his energy and attention on his family’s car rental business.

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to work with some very committed legislators on issues that are important to me, and that are important to the Alaskans I’ve been so privileged to represent,” said Halcro. “But I have responsibilities to my family and our business as well, and it is time now to stay home and give them the attention they deserve.”

Halcro has worked for years as a manager of the statewide Avis Car Rental franchise owned by his family, and said he will be assuming increased responsibilities that would have made it impossible to serve in Juneau for a third term.

“I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to my family, for the chance to serve for the past four years,” said Halcro, who at 37 is one of the youngest members of the Legislature. “I am also very grateful to my friends, neighbors and constituents throughout District 12 for allowing me the privilege of representing them in the Legislature.”

Following two years as chair of the Sand Lake Community Council, Halcro was first elected in 1998 to represent District 12, and was returned to office for a second term in 2000. Among his legislative accomplishments, he said he was most proud of both drawing attention to the state’s long-term fiscal gap, and of suggesting workable solutions.

While declining to run in 2002, Halcro left the door open for a possible return to elected office.

“When the timing is right, I will give strong consideration to returning to public service as an elected representative,” he said. “Until that time, I will be busy working in the private sector, doing my part to provide jobs for Alaskans and keep our tourism industry healthy and growing.”
