Poll Shows Alaskans Want Fixes Before Taxes
(JUNEAU) - Sen. Rick Halford (R-Chugiak) and Sen. Dave Donley (R-Anchorage), held a press conference Thursday, to highlight a recent poll that showed a majority of Alaskans from across the state support the Republican Senate Majority's approach to the fiscal gap. In general, the poll indicates that Alaskans want to see less spending, more cuts and industry type taxes such as, alcohol or cruise ship taxes, before the implementation of any new broad-based tax. In all of the talk about how to fix the state's fiscal crisis, Sen. Halford has held firmly to his belief that the Permanent Fund should not be touched at this time. A resounding 67 percent of the people surveyed agree with the Senate President on this point. "The Permanent Fund is the real success story of the fiscal organization of the state," said Halford. "We should protect it and let it grow until it is truly needed." The poll conducted by Moore Information interviewed 400 likely voters from both urban and rural areas of the state. # # # Broadcasters Note:
