House Majority Picks Strong Leadership Team
(ANCHORAGE) - After a ten-year tenure in Alaska's House of Representatives Eagle River Republican Rep. Pete Kott has been selected by his colleagues as the new Speaker of the House. House members met Thursday afternoon to decide on the organization of the Twenty-Third Legislature. In a meeting, which took less than a half a day, the House emerged with its new leadership and a full slate of committee chairs for the upcoming session. "We had a smooth organizational meeting," said Kott. "And now we are ready to move forward and deal with the challenges facing Alaska." Kott said he feels very optimistic about being able to work with the new Senate and the Murkowski administration to tackle the issues facing the State. Rep. John Harris (R-Valdez) and Rep. Bill Williams (R-Saxman), have been selected as co-chairs to the important House Finance Committee. Harris who sought the Speakers position said he is confident that the House has put together a strong team, one that is ready, willing and able to answer the call from voters this election. "The people of Alaska have spoken loud and clear as to how it is that they want their Government to operate," said Kott. "And we are going to deliver." Lisa Murkowski, (R-Anchorage) will assume the reigns of House Majority leader when the Legislature reconvenes in January and she too believes that the ease by which the new House organization came together is sign of a good, productive session to come. "We have a strong team of regional representation leading the House this year," said Murkowski. "Add to that the new leadership in the other body and in the Governor's office and you have all the tools you need for a good session." Rep. Norman Rokeberg (R-Anchorage), will fill the other major leadership position as House Rules chairman. Rokeberg says he is looking forward to the challenges that come with the position. "I am honored to be offered the chance to bring my experience to the position of Rules chair," said Rokeberg. "I feel the representation of the House Leadership including the Finance Committee has struck a good regional balance." The full slate of committee chairs is attached to this release. # # # Attachments:
