Leman Bill Promotes Charitable Giving
(JUNEAU) - Sen. Loren Leman (R-Anchorage), on Tuesday introduced Senate Bill 318, "The Good Neighbor Act," which would allow the assignment of a Permanent Fund Dividend to organizations that qualify for nonprofit status or are exempt from federal taxation. Leman says that constituents who regularly contribute to charitable and religious organizations requested the opportunity to assign dividends directly to an entity of their choice. "When Alaskans desire to share their Permanent Fund Dividend to make our state a better place to live, we should help facilitate that good will," Leman said. "Providing them an option for assigning their dividends to a charity they choose promotes that spirit of giving." Currently, permanent fund dividends may be assigned only to federal, state, or municipal government agencies, either through voluntary assignment or by court order. "In the wake of the horrible events in Washington, New York and Pennsylvania on September 11 we saw a resurgence in the American spirit, a spirit of community, love and giving," said Leman. "I would like to encourage the spirit of being a good Alaska neighbor." SB 318 will be heard first in the Senate State Affairs Committee. # # # Attachments:
