(JUNEAU) - Sen. Loren Leman (R-Anchorage) introduced a resolution in the Senate on Wednesday designed to raise public awareness of sexual abuse and sexual assaults.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 6 would declare April, 2001 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. SCR 6 is a companion resolution to HCR 7, introduced in the House by Rep. Kevin Meyer on Feb. 23, 2001. It is intended that individuals, schools, public and private agencies and other organizations will use the month for educational and outreach activities.

"Sexual assault and the sexual abuse of women and children are far too common in Alaska," Leman said. "We need to increase awareness and get people and communities involved in preventing these devastating crimes."
