Joint State-Federal Research and Development Resolution Passes Legislature
(JUNEAU) - A resolution that urges state and federal agencies to prepare a joint research and development plan passed out of the House of Representatives Tuesday by a vote of 38-0. Senate Joint Resolution 44 requests that a coordinated research and development plan be constructed, with input from the Legislature, to help expand and diversify Alaska's economy. "Every year, tens of millions of dollars in state and federal funds are directed toward research and development in Alaska," said Sen. Loren Leman (R-Anchorage). "The Legislature should have a role in that process by providing input and oversight." State agencies such as the Alaska Science and Technology Foundation and the University of Alaska will coordinate with federal agencies such as the U.S. Arctic Research Commission. The joint plan will be presented to the Legislature next January. "At a time when we Alaskans are facing budget challenges, it makes sense to pool resources already in existence," Leman said. "SJR 44 is a step in the right direction and at no cost to the state." # # # Attachments:
