House Broadens Children's Trust Plates
(JUNEAU) - Private drivers won't be the only ones eligible to help Alaska children by buying special Children's Trust license plates, under a bill passed by the House today. House Bill 509 would authorize the state to sell Alaska Children's Trust license plates for use on commercial vehicles, expanding upon the sales of such plates to owners of private vehicles, said Rep. Lisa Murkowski (R-Anchorage), who sponsored the bill as chair of the House Labor and Commerce Committee. "A significant number of private individuals have already purchased these plates, which provide a significant source of revenue to help the Children's Trust work to prevent child abuse and neglect," Murkowski said. "This bill makes the simple change that will allow many operators of commercial vehicles to do the same." The Alaska Children's Trust is a savings account dedicated to funding community-initiated projects to eliminate child abuse and neglect," Murkowski said. The trust's funds grow through gifts, bequests, corporate and individual contributions, legislative appropriations, federal funds and sales of heirloom marriage and birth certificates as well as Children's Trust license plates. HB 509 responds to the many requests from private industry and private businesses seeking to purchase ACT license plates for commercial or fleet vehicles. If all of the 56,000 such vehicles registered in Alaska were to purchase the $100 plates, the Children's Trust could generate a potential additional $5.6 million for the Trust, she said. HB 509 moves next to the Senate for consideration. # # # Attachments:
