(JUNEAU) - Rep. Scott Ogan (R-Palmer) remains in critical condition today in Providence Alaska Medical Center's coronary car unit in Anchorage, though his medical condition has improved slightly since suffering a heart attack in Palmer Saturday.

Physicians early Tuesday afternoon removed an intra-aortic balloon pump that had been helping Ogan's heart function more easily, and his heart is now pumping fully on its own, said Linda Hay, his legislative chief of staff.

Doctors will continue to monitor Ogan's medical condition and progress as they consider the best course of treatment over the next several days. Hay pointed out that while physicians are using medical technology to help Ogan breathe, rest and heal, he is not dependent on "life support" equipment for survival.

Ogan was in Palmer to accept the Alaska Outdoor Council's "Legislator of the Year" award when he experienced the heart attack on Saturday. He was taken first by ambulance to Palmer's Valley Hospital, then by medical helicopter to Providence.

On the floor of the Alaska House of Representatives this morning, members expressed their concern and support for Ogan shortly before voting unanimously to pass House Joint Resolution 44, a measure Ogan introduced as chair of the House Special Committee on Oil and Gas to encourage construction of a natural gas pipeline that would bring the maximum benefit to the state and residents of Alaska.
