House OKs Insurance Minimums for Cabs
(JUNEAU) - The House today unanimously passed legislation establishing statewide liability insurance coverage minimums for taxicabs. House Bill 67, sponsored by Rep. Norman Rokeberg (R-Anchorage), will require people registering taxicabs to prove they have per-accident liability coverage of $100,000 for injuries to one person, $300,000 for injuries to more than one person, and $50,000 for property damage. "This requirement in no way interferes with a local government's ability to set higher minimums, and many communities, and prudent cab companies, already insist on insurance at these levels or higher," Rokeberg said. "This makes sure that all Alaskans have a reasonable expectation that any cab they ride in carries a minimum amount of protection." HB 67 complements other legislation Rokeberg has introduced regarding liability and cabs. His House Bill 68, now in the House Rules Committee, would insulate from liability any cabbie driving an intoxicated person's car home from a bar because that person was unable to drive by virtue of being under the influence. HB 67 moves next to the Senate for consideration. # # # Attachments:
