House Declares Day of Remembrance
(JUNEAU) - Alaskans would observe a special day of remembrance on Sept. 11, 2002 to honor emergency service providers, peace officers, military personnel and civilian volunteers for their courage, sacrifice and public service under House Concurrent Resolution 20, which passed the House today. "Sept. 11, 2001 was certainly a cataclysmic event, that brought out the best and the worst in human nature," said Rep. Gary Stevens (R-Kodiak) who sponsored the resolution. "The worst were the terrorists who took the lives of thousands of innocent civilians but the best were the emergency service providers and the armed forces personnel who were there and showed us what real service and real sacrifice and dedication are all about." While terrorist attacks of the magnitude of those that struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon are mercifully rare, Stevens said, those responsible for responding to these or any other emergencies deserve to know that the people they serve recognize and appreciate their efforts. His resolution would help encourage public acknowledgement of the Alaskans involved in such work. "HCR 20 asks the governor to declare Sept. 11, 2002 as a Day of Remembrance so that we as Alaskans can pay honor and respect to our firefighters, our paramedics, our police officers, our National Guard personnel, and all the armed forces personnel that were involved, all the people who responded to these tragedies, and who stand by every day to serve us," Stevens said. HCR 20 passed the House unanimously, and moves to the Senate for consideration. # # # Attachments:
