New Law to Make Concealed Carry More Efficient

For Immediate Release: May 3, 2002
Contact: Ron Irwin, Senate Majority Press Secretary, at (907) 465-3803

(JUNEAU) - Sen. Robin Taylor (R-Wrangell), received word Friday that Senate Bill 242, which makes changes to the state's concealed carry statutes has become law.

Sponsored by Taylor, SB 242 clarifies a law passed by the 21st Legislature, which recognizes and grants reciprocity to concealed carry permitees from other states. This new legislation will simplify the process and allow it to work without taxing the resources of the Department of Public Safety.

SB 242 will recognize concealed carry permits from other states, without placing the burden of review and evaluation of other state's permits on the Department of Public Safety.

Despite lawmakers close to the governor advocating on behalf of SB 242, he chose to have the bill become law without his signature.

SB 242 will now be sent to the Lt. Governor for permanent filling.
