Taylor Calls Judicary Hearings on RCA

For Immediate Release: June 7, 2002
Contact: Ron Irwin, Senate Majority Press Secretary, at (907) 465-3803

(ANCHORAGE) - Senator Robin Taylor (R-Wrangell), Senate Judiciary Committee chair, announced Thursday that he will be holding committee hearings in Anchorage on June 12 at 1p.m. and June 13 at 10 a.m. to address the administration’s demands for early reauthorization of the Regulatory Commission of Alaska.

Taylor says there is no need to take action on this early call for reauthorization of RCA and that the issue should be held for the next governor and next legislature to give the reauthorization the scrutiny it needs and deserves rather than being forced to “rubber stamp” an issue, which has such a direct impact on the lives of all Alaskan, the cost of their utilities.

Taylor points out that such a delay would have zero effect on the ability of RCA to continue to operate as normal, including being able to take on new cases. In fact during the inception of the sunset provision 17 years ago up through 1994, six different boards at eight different times have fully operated under the sunset year. This includes the Transportation Board, Parole Board, Alcohol and Beverage Control and the RCA’s predecessor the Alaska Public Utilities Commission, just to name a few. Many others have been operated under sunset provisions since that time as well.

The hearings Taylor has scheduled are designed to gather more information before the Legislature returns to Juneau for a special session June 24, on this issue.

The media and public are invited to attend the Anchorage hearings on June 12 at 1 p.m., June 13 at 10 a.m. in the Anchorage Legislative Information Office conference room located at 716 W. Fourth Avenue. Hearings are also tentatively scheduled for June 20 and 21 with time still to be announced.
