For Immediate Release: August 8, 2001
Contact: Senator John Torgerson at (907) 260-3041

(ANCHORAGE) - The Joint Committee on Natural Gas Pipelines will hold public hearings on Aug. 14 and 15, 2001, on the current status of a natural gas pipeline to carry Alaska's gas to market. The hearings will be held at the Fairbanks North Star Borough Administration Center in the Assembly Chambers, 809 Pioneer Road.

The hearings will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and the committee will receive an update from Department of Revenue Commissioner Wilson Condon on a report to the Legislature regarding state ownership or involvement in a pipeline. Testimony on the current legal and practical issues surrounding permits and leases for a gas pipeline will be provided by the following: Cammy Oechsli Taylor, commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission; Jack Griffin, assistant attorney general for Alaska; Jack Chenowith, legislative legal counsel; and Bill Britt, state pipeline coordinator for the Joint Pipeline Office.

On Wednesday the committee will convene at 9 a.m. and will hear from staff members for Alaska's congressional delegation on recent energy policy activities. John Katz, director of state/federal relations and special counsel to the Governor, will provide information on Canada's recent political actions regarding Alaska's national gas. Representatives of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Regulatory Commission of Alaska will answer questions raised during the last committee meeting on regulation of a gas pipeline through Alaska.

Oil and gas producers and groups advocating for construction of a gas pipeline will meet with the committee on Wednesday, including representatives from Alaska Natural Gas to Liquids Company, Alaska Gasline Port Authority, Foothills Pipe Lines and the producer groups.

The committee will take public testimony at 5:30 p.m. on both days, and those wishing to testify are asked to keep their comments to no more than three minutes. A complete agenda is available at: http://www.akrepublicans.org/pastlegs/22ndleg/press/prtorgerson208062001.shtml
