Ward Bill Would Issue State Diploma
(JUNEAU) - Sen. Jerry Ward (R-Kenai) introduced a bill on Tuesday that would issue a State of Alaska high school diploma with endorsements for academic competency to graduating seniors. "I've heard a lot of testimony in the Senate Health, Education and Social Services Committee from parents and educators on the High School Graduation and Competency Exam," said Ward. "Most of the people in my district support the idea of a competency exam but aren't sure that the diploma should hinge on the results of the current test." Senate Bill 120 would establish a State of Alaska high school diploma that would be issued to all students who meet the academic requirements established by the Department of Education. The competency exam would continue to be administered, and students would receive endorsements on their diplomas for each of the three sections that they pass. # # # Attachments:
