Weekly Star Editorial for February 6, 1997

It was great to meet with more than two dozen constituents during our recent legislative hearing in Eagle River. Juneau is a remote and somewhat strange environment. Getting away from it is refreshing and tends to restore my priorities.

The legislature voted on the Sanders/ethics issue last week. That issue seemed to me to be much ado about very little. I was out of town for the vote on the penalty for Rep. Sanders, but would have supported the majority vote.

We are continuing to work on the following issues:

• Fetal alcohol syndrome and child abuse.
• Domestic violence.
• Availability of public school classes to part-time students.
• Future state-wide telecommunication policy.
• The state budget.
• Fish allocation issues.
• Studying a transportation system to northwest Alaska to facilitate the development of very large mineral resources in that area.
• School funding.
