Juneau -- The 2nd Session of the 21st Alaska State Legislature is due to adjourn tonight, with six days left before the mandated end of session. The operating, capital and bonding budgets are all but tucked away in bed for another year. The one outstanding issue though is funding for the new state employee contracts. Governor Tony Knowles is likely to call the Legislature right back in to special session beginning on Thursday May 4th if the House and Senate fail to deal with this item. "It seems to be the consensus of both houses that we deal with the labor agreements separately, rather than try and link them to other pieces of legislation," said Representative Alan Austerman (R-Kodiak). The special session would presumably be called for in a proclamation issued by the governor just before the 2nd session adjourns. |
