Juneau -- After years of considering such action, Congress recently approved a Certificate of Recognition for individuals who served this nation during the Cold War era, September 2, 1945 to December 26, 1991. In the decree announcing the decision, Congress noted, "This rivalry, potentially the most dangerous military confrontation in the history of mankind, has come to a close without a direct superpower military conflict. The discipline and dedication of those personnel were fundamental to the prevention of a superpower conflict." Issued by the Secretary of Defense, Cold War Recognition Certificates are available to qualifying members of the Armed Forces as well as civilian personnel of the Department of Defense and other Government Agencies contributing to national security.
