Anchorage—Western state legislators gathered in Anchorage for the 51st Annual Meeting of the Council of State Governments-WEST presented Sen. Jeannette Hamby (R-Oregon) with the Bettye Fahrenkamp award for distinguished service to her state and region. Hamby is the Chair-elect of CSG-WEST and a long-time member of the Oregon Legislature.

The award is a new honor bestowed by the association of Western state legislators and is named after the late Senator Bettye Fahrenkamp who represented Fairbanks in the Alaska Legislature from 1978 until her death in 1991.

Alaska Representative Ramona Barnes (R-Anchorage) was instrumental in establishing the award to honor the late Sen. Fahrenkamp who Barnes described as "a strong voice for Alaska and its needs at the regional and national level." Fahrenkamp was a public school teacher in Fairbanks, a Democratic National Committeewoman for Alaska and a past chair of the CSG-WEST’s predecessor organization, the Western Legislative Conference.

CSG-WEST is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that serves Western state legislators. Utah Speaker Melvin R. Brown currently chairs the group.
