Cowdery Fights-off Democrats' Attempts to Kill Measure
For Immediate Release: March 1, 2000 Juneau -- In one of the longest and most spirited debates of the Second Session of the 21st Alaska Legislature, Representative John Cowdery (R-Anchorage), was able to fight-off attempts to gut House Bill 180, a child protection measure. HB 180 would make it a crime to knowingly allow a child to be in the immediate physical presence of illegal drugs. "It became very clear during today's debate on this bill that a significant difference exists between Democrats and Republicans," said Cowdery. "The Democrats tried to gut this bill. When they couldn't gut it, they tried to nibble it to death with a variety of amendments. "I am very proud that the Republican Majority Caucus members took a strong stand to protect children against both the immediate and long-term influences of the drug culture," Cowdery said. House Bill 180 is scheduled to come up for a final vote in the House on Friday, March 3rd. |
