Swiss Respond Favorably to Senate Holocaust Resolution

For Immediate Release: April 27, 1998 Contact: Senator Dave Donley, at (907) 465-3892.

Juneau - In early March the Alaska State Senate approved Senate Resolution 1, sponsored by Senator Dave Donley (R - Midtown Anchorage), requesting compensation of holocaust victims by the Swiss government and banking industry and thanking them for their recent efforts to do so. The Resolution was sent to Alaska's Congressional Delegation, the U.S. State Department, and the Swiss Government. The Alaska State Senate joins the legislatures of a number of other states who have also passed similar resolutions.

The Swiss Government recently responded with enthusiasm and thanks, in the form of a letter from the Swiss Ambassador, for the consideration and support of the Alaska State Senate in recognizing the efforts of the Swiss government to bring restitution to the victims and heirs of victims of the Holocaust.

The Swiss government has established two commissions to investigate this matter and they continue to cooperate with international Jewish organizations to investigate these claims.

The New York State Banking Commission has established the Holocaust Claims Processing Office to assist individuals who may be entitled to assets held by Swiss banks since WWII. Their toll free number is 1-800-695-3318.
