Committee Calls for Hearing on Seasonal Highways

Juneau -- The House Committee on Community and Regional Affairs has announced plans to hold an oversight hearing on Governor Knowles' decision not to open some seasonal highways on time. The State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has decided to significantly delay the opening of the Taylor, Denali, and Copper River Highways, McCarthy Road, and the three roads from Nome.

The Committee Co-Chairman, Andrew Halcro (R-Anchorage) requested the hearing after learning of the decision. "The residents of these areas depend on these roads for access. Many of these people have planned their food, fuel, and supply purchased based on the timely opening of these roads," Halcro said in announcing the hearing.

"With a total Departmental budget of $335 million, I believe there are more responsible ways to cut $316,000. People depend on these roads. There has to be ways to cut the budget without stranding these rural communities," continued Halcro.

Representative Carl Morgan (R-Aniak), who represents most of the people affected by the decision, was glad the Committee scheduled the hearing. "I am excited that Co-Chairman Halcro has called this hearing. The Taylor Highway is important to the people of Eagle, Chicken and Tok, and the economy of the entire region; Fairbanks to Glennallen."

"The tour companies have already booked for the season. Area miners have already scheduled their supply runs. The Governor has effectively cut an additional 45 days off the tourist season for the small businesses in the area. These people depend on these roads being open," said Morgan.

The Committee will hold its hearing on Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in room 124 of the Capitol Building from 8:00 am until 10:00 am.
