For Immediate Release: March 30, 1999
Juneau -- The Anchorage Caucus, the bipartisan organization of members of the State House and Senate from the Anchorage area, passed a resolution today supporting full funding for the expansion of the library at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The Resolution, sponsored by Representative Allen Kemplen (D-Fairview), recognizes the importance of the University to the Anchorage economy and the need to expand the University's library. "The University desperately needs to expand its library resources. If the Anchorage Caucus can unify behind UAA, we can ensure that UAA continues to be a resource for all the people of Anchorage," Kemplen said. Anchorage Caucus Senate Co-Chair Senator Dave Donley (R-Midtown) indicated his support for the University after voting for the Resolution. "The University is vital to providing qualified Alaskan employees for expanding businesses. The library is the foundation for providing young Alaskans with the tools they need to compete in the Alaskan job market." House Co-Chair Representative Andrew Halcro (R-Sand Lake) concurred. "University President Mark Hamilton made a compelling case for the University when he was in Juneau. UAA should be an engine for economic progress. The library is the fuel to keep the engine running." The State appropriated $9.6 million for design, site development and construction the UAA library last year. This non-binding Resolution supports providing the additional funding required to complete the project. A copy of the Resolution is attached.
