Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Monday passed House Bill 277, sponsored by Representative Andrew Halcro (R-Anchorage). HB 277 would allow teachers who have retired to return to teaching in the public schools without forfeiting their retirement benefits. "This bill addresses the fast-shrinking pool of qualified teachers in Alaska," Halcro said. "There is a dramatic shortage of special education teachers." The bill also provides that the Teachers Retirement System (TERS) report to the legislature within the first 30 days of a legislative session any effect of HB 277 on TERS. The bill includes a sunset clause on July 1, 2003, requiring the legislature to review the matter prior to that time. HB 277 passed the House 34-3. Attachments:
