Anchorage -- The House Transportation and Judiciary committees will hold a joint meeting Tuesday, November 28 to discuss the final report of the municipal DUI prevention task force and proposed legislation to curb drinking and driving. The committees will focus on recommendations for new state and municipal laws in the final report recently released by Mayor George Wuerch's "DUI Prevention Task Force," said Representative Andrew Halcro (R-Anchorage), chair of the House Transportation Committee. They also plan to hear presentations on proposed legislation from state lawmakers who have been working toward solutions to the serious problem of drunken drivers on Alaska's roads. The meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the second-floor conference room at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office, 716 W. Fourth Ave. Those unable to attend in person may contact Halcro's office to arrange off-site teleconferencing. The Transportation Committee met in August to monitor the task force's efforts to date, and to review several options and ideas from state legislators on proposed legislation to curb drinking and driving. "The first meeting was very informative and productive for setting a foundation to address this problem," said Halcro. "Now we want to use it as a stepping stone, in concert with the task force's findings, to do all we can to eliminate this hazard from our roads. We cannot allow the horrible tragedies of this summer to be repeated." Members of the public are encouraged to attend and share their views on the implementation of the task force's findings and on any draft legislation to be presented. |
