Halford Calls for Regional Corporation Audits

Juneau -- During today's Senate floor session, Senator Rick Halford (R - Chugiak) called upon the Legislature and the State of Alaska to audit the financial status of the Alaska Native Regional Corporations and their compliance with the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.

"While some of the regional corporations have done a good job in responsibly managing their assets for the benefit of their membership, others seem to be more concerned with providing for insiders rather than for their shareholders," said Senator Halford.

Halford's memorandum, distributed to all members of the Senate with a copy of Robert Rude's book An Act of Deception, concludes that only after thorough review of the regional corporations "will we understand some of the pressure behind the tribal movement."
