Representative Mark Hanley Resigns
"Best and the Brightest" Will Be Sorely Missed
For Immediate Release July 30, 1998 Contact: Rep. Gail Phillips at (907) 258-8164.
Anchorage -- Representative Mark Hanley (R-Anchorage) today resigned his seat in the Alaska House of Representatives.
Rep. Hanley's resignation brings to a close an illustrious eight-year legislative career which had marked him, in the words of a recent newspaper article, as one of the "best and the brightest" in the Alaska Legislature. Rep. Hanley is resigning to take a position with the Anadarko Petroleum Corporation.
"Personally, it is with great reluctance that I receive his resignation. I wish Mark the best," said Rep. Gail Phillips (R-Homer), Speaker of the House. "But we will all miss his insight, his abilities, and the steadfastness he brought to the job," Phillips said.
Hanley, 40, was first elected to the House in 1990. In 1995 he became Co-Chair of the House Finance Committee. Hanley was instrumental in the success of the Republican-led Majority Coalition's efforts to restructure State government spending.
"Over the past three years, the Legislature has been able to reduce State government spending by over $190 million," Phillips said. "We've also been able to institute results-based budgeting, whereby Alaskans get to see the results of what they're paying for before they spend any more money. Representative Hanley was a key player in both of those successes and countless others," Phillips said. "He brought a conscientious, thoughtful, and caring perspective to his role as Finance Chairman. He is a good consensus builder."
Hanley's resignation was contained in a letter to Speaker Phillips. The resignation is effective July 30th.
