House Announces New Special Committee On Telecommunications

For Immediate Release: April 10, 1997 Contact: Rep. Pete Kott (907) 465-3777

JUNEAU -- Due to rapid changes in the telecommunications industry and recognizing the implications the Federal Telecommunications Act of 1996 will have on Alaska’s economy, the House Wednesday announced the formation of new House Special Committee on Telecommunications.

The House Wednesday passed House Resolution 7, sponsored by Representative Pete Kott, which creates the new committee. Members will soon be named to the panel by House Speaker Gail Phillips.

Rep. Kott said to implement the federal law, states must review their own laws and regulations and determine what changes are needed.

"Our telecommunications committee will provide a forum for facilitating the goals of the Telecommunications Act -- to encourage competition in the telecommunications industry while providing better service to Alaskans," said Kott.

"The creation of this committee will enable us to have internal expertise on how the federal legislation will impact Alaska," said Speaker Gail Phillips.

Kott said the House Telecommunications Committee will be working with a similar committee established in the Senate.
