House Approves Amended Rural Loan Program Caps

Bethel and Haines to Benefit Immediately

Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Saturday unanimously approved House Bill 230 which amends the population caps in the rural loan program within the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation.

According to sponsor, Representative Ivan M. Ivan, D-Akiak, some rural communities are approaching the cap or have exceeded the cap.

"House Bill 230 has immediate effects on two rural Alaska communities, Bethel and Haines," Ivan said. "Haines has exceeded the 1,400 cap while Bethel is rapidly approaching the current statutory population cap of 5,500. By amending the population caps, these two communities will be able to continue their participation in AHFC's rural loan program," Ivan said.

The vote on House Bill 230 was 40-0. It now to the Senate for consideration.
