Legislative Regulation Review Committee Organizes

Work to begin to address Alaska's onerous regulations

For Immediate Release: February 4, 1997 Contact: Rep. Jeannette James (907) 465-3743

JUNEAU - The joint Senate and House Legislative Regulation Review Committee held its first meeting Tuesday to organize and establish priority issues. Representative Jeannette James, Chair of the committee said she understands the frustration the public has with regulations that have gone too far, are onerous, or out of date.

"The state bureaucracy creates hundreds of regulations every year. The purpose of this review committee is to take a look at how state regulations are promulgated and which state regulations need to be changed, amended or repealed," said Representative James.

"The purpose of today's meeting was to establish initial goals," said James.

"There is an overwhelming amount of work to be done. We will be narrowing our focus to identify the most important issues and set achievable goals," said James.

"Ultimately what we would like to achieve is one-stop shopping for the regulated community. There are too many instances in which either an individual or group unnecessarily fall under the jurisdiction of multiple local, state and federal agencies," said James.
