Public Testimony Scheduled for Saturday
For Immediate Release: February 18, 1999 Juneau -- The House State Affairs Committee Thursday heard testimony on three bills proposed by the Governor to raise revenue for State operations. Committee Chair Representative Jeannette James (R-North Pole) has announced the committee will meet Saturday, February 20, to take public testimony on the proposals. House Bill 89 would authorize a public vote on a transfer of $4 billion from the Permanent Fund Earnings Reserve to the State's Constitutional Budget Reserve Account. House Bill 90 would make that transfer. House Bill 91 proposes a state income tax. "Today we heard from Revenue Commissioner Wilson Condon, who showed us State revenues and spending and demonstrated that there really is a fiscal gap," said James. "While the governor's proposals certainly seem to be one way to address that fiscal gap, there are others, and we want to look at all of them. "The State Affairs Committee will hold a public hearing this Saturday to hear from the public," said James. "People who want to testify by teleconference should contact their local Legislative Information Offices or call my office here in Juneau at 465-4963." The hearing will be held Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the House State Affairs Committee, Room 102 of the State Capitol, and will be teleconferenced statewide.
