Measure Calls for Standardized Policy Among School Districts
For Immediate Release: February 28, 2000 Juneau -- The Alaska Senate Monday unanimously passed House Bill 192, which seeks to standardize Pledge of Allegiance policies among the state's public schools and school systems. "It is important to stress up front that this bill does not compel anyone to recite the Pledge against his or her conscience or belief system," said Representative Jeannette James (R-North Pole), sponsor of HB 192. "Students who object to reciting the Pledge on such grounds are simply asked to maintain a respectful silence. The real goal of this bill is to require public schools to conduct regular flag exercises - which include the Pledge of Allegiance." HB 192 would bring Alaska's flag statute in line with those of many other states and is based on the flag statute of the State of Washington. HB 192 was returned to the House for concurrence with Senate committee changes to the bill. |
