Alaska Public Building Fund Money Would Help Defer Maintenance and Other Costs
For Immediate Release: March 26, 1999 Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Friday unanimously passed House Bill 112, which would establish the Alaska Public Building Fund, which would be used to help pay for maintenance and other costs of state-owned facilities. "Alaska has an enormous problem with maintenance of its public facilities," said Representative Jeannette James (R-North Pole), sponsor of HB 112. "Funds are not allocated for routine maintenance, so we are forced to continually repair and replace our facilities at great expense. "House Bill 112 would establish the Alaska Public Building Find as a special account in the general fund," James said. "Occupants of state-owned buildings would pay "rent" into this fund. The Legislature could appropriate funds from this account to pay operating, maintenance, and other costs of state-owned buildings." House Bill 112 now moves to the Senate.
