Resolution Seeks Completion of Dalton Highway
For Immediate Release: May 7, 1999 Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Friday unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 5, which supports the opening of the last few miles of the Dalton Highway and urges the Governor to move expeditiously toward that end. "While Alaska law clearly sees the Dalton Highway as a road connecting the Arctic Ocean with the rest of the state, the road currently ends at oil company checkpoints just seven miles from the ocean, a situation which has proved frustrating for Alaskans and visitors alike," said Representative Jeannette James (R-North Pole), sponsor of HCR 5. "Unless you're a VIP or an oil company or government official, it will cost you $20 to ride a bus those last few miles to the Arctic Ocean. "This is unfair in the extreme. For a large family, the fare is prohibitive. For the adventurous, the time limits are prohibitive. For just about everyone, the constraints are onerous," James said. "There is no reason why oil companies and the State cannot come to a reasonable agreement in time for the 1999 tourism season, so that visitors and Alaskans alike can walk the shores of the Arctic Ocean." |
